R. Kent Hutson

I am a neuroradiologist with Radiology Partners and the Director of Imaging Informatics for Matrix Radiology, the teleradiology practice of Radiology Partners. As the informatics director, I strive to optimize radiologist workflow efficiency through a combination of well-established best practices in computer science blended with the right application of cutting-edge analytics. I strongly believe that radiology (and medicine in general) can benefit from the recent advances in artificial intelligence methodologies.

I have been involved in artificial intelligence for than 30 years, first earning a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at Texas A&M University in 1987. After attending Baylor College of Medicine, I completed a National Library of Medicine Medical Informatics Fellowship where I worked on machine learning algorithms to perform tissue characterization on MRI’s of the brain. In recent years, I have become much more hopeful that we can use AI techniques to improve the practice of medicine – my algorithm that took nearly two hours in 1991 can now be done in a less than a few seconds with current software/hardware.

While practicing neuroradiology, I have also served as chair of two radiology departments, president of a private practice group, and medical director in a large corporate radiology group. During this time, I also obtained board certification as a Certified Physician Executive, a program that trains physicians in management, finance, and quality improvement. This administrative and business experience in medicine has given me a different perspective on the potential benefits of AI in the non-interpretive aspects of radiology.

I currently serve on the IHE (Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise) Radiology Planning Committee and recently served as chair of the Informatics Task Force for the Radiology Business Management Association. I enjoy lecturing on the nuts and bolts of artificial intelligence to audiences that are new to AI. We won’t make real progress until everyone involved in medicine can see through the hype and truly understand the tools of artificial intelligence and how they can improve the practice of medicine.
